SCORE (out of ten for each category) :
About the organization – 3
About the job – 7
Rewards – 0
Overall (out of 30) – 10
ANALYSIS:
This job description is very one-sided – they are communicating only what a candidate can do for them and fail to mention what they can do for you. The section “Roles and Responsibilities” is extensive; however, the simple bullet points read more like a list and fail to really describe the job functions clearly. It would benefit from a further explanation of the functions as well as the results desired from the job functions.
The little mentioned about the restaurant fails to sell the organization as an employer of choice. Plus, there is no information on rewards that they will offer. This job description will most likely succeed in attracting candidates that just need a job, rather than quality candidates who are looking for an opportunity to further develop.

SCORE (out of ten for each category) :
About the organization – 6
About the job – 9
Rewards – 7
Overall (out of 30) – 22
ANALYSIS:
This is a great job description as they cover all the bases, and use language that is precise, engaging, and informative. While they do not directly sell the organization, they cleverly show how the candidate will contribute to the restaurant’s overall high standard of premium dining, and work alongside passionate and driven professionals. The candidate already has a sense that this restaurant is serious and dedicated about their establishment and the staff they hire.
The job functions are communicated well and deliver what is essential to the position in a succinct manner. They could have expanded more, though this was written for a newspaper which might have restricted the length. Beginning with an overview of the physical set-up of the restaurant is very helpful for candidates to get a sense of the workplace. Rewards are only briefly mentioned, although it is enough to engage candidates and prompt further questions. Overall it is an effective job description that sells the position and organization as an excellent opportunity.

SCORE (out of ten for each category) :
About the organization – 3
About the job – 3
Rewards – 8
Overall (out of 30) – 14
ANALYSIS:
Rewards are the central focus and selling point with this job description. Unfortunately they fail to mention much about the actual restaurant! Apart from the name, which might be well know in the area, and that they are planning an expansion, candidates are left with nothing of the organization’s culture, brand, or mission. The job description is lacking, listing three points that do not capture the essential job functions. A “run it like you own it mentality” and “’Hands-on’ management style” is vague, and while it may be important, these points should only be mentioned secondary to daily job functions.
It is clear that the description seeks to attract candidates solely with the rewards package offered. While mentioning rewards as part of a complete description is a good idea, to rely solely upon it is a common, yet dangerous strategy, because it sends red flags – perhaps the organization is hiding something about the position or cannot find anything else about the job to sell, so they must rely on the rewards package. Attracting professionals, and dedicated restaurant managers, will be a challenge with this description.

SCORE (out of ten for each category) :
About the organization – 5
About the job – 7
Rewards – 8
Overall (out of 30) – 20
ANALYSIS:
This description will strongly appeal to restaurant managers looking for an opportunity to progress into a higher role. The description really sells the promise of career progression to a regional manager with your own location.
However, discussion of the job functions is general, and could use some refining to become more informative, and candidates would benefit from further explanation of management duties, such as number of staff on a daily basis, and more on the management systems they need to maintain.
There are also a number of spelling mistakes (including in the contact information/email address!), which indicates that this was likely hurried without too much attention to detail. The lack of information about the restaurant is also worrying. From the description given, candidates must gather their own idea of the restaurant. It’s better to directly give a background or organization summary, so as not to cause any false impressions.
Overall though, it succeeds in providing a rough overview of the essential functions.

ANALYSIS:
This is an example of a great description. What they do well here is sell whole package – this description shows a challenging position in a dedicated organization and a full rewards package.
They present an opportunity of how the right person will contribute to the overall success of the organization, and show that he or she will be rewarded well. “You’ll make decisions that make a big difference and you’ll enjoy big rewards.” The organization’s goals are aligned with the job functions, giving candidates a sense they will be a valued team member.
Also this is first description we’ve looked at that mentions culture and gives candidates a real feel of the work environment. They sell the rewards effectively by not focusing too much on the package, but still showing they have much to offer. And candidates are referred to a website where they can view the full package in detail.
When listing the job functions, the description uses understandable language; it is thorough and informative. They also note how job performance will be measured. All-in-all, it paints a great picture of the position for candidates, and as such, will likely attract many great applications.
