# Start a separation

A separation is the offboarding record for someone who is leaving. Open **Employee Separation** under Lifecycle & Compliance. You can also open the employee, then **Connections**, then Lifecycle, then the + on Separations.

1. Click **New Employee Separation**.
2. Choose Employee. Enter Separation Begins On. Both are required. Department and Designation fill from the employee and stay read-only. Resignation Letter Date is read-only. Status starts as Pending and stays read-only. The choices are Pending, In Process, and Completed.
3. Choose Employee Separation Template if you already have one. Turn on Notify Users by Email if those people should get email.
4. Under Separation Activities, click **Add Row**. Activity Name is required. Role is HR User, Manager, or Employee. Status on a row is Pending, In Process, or Completed.
5. Add Exit Interview Summary if you have it.
6. Click **Create Employee Separation**.

Changing Status on the employee record to Left is a separate step on the employee. This page does not generate a salary slip.

## What you should see

The title becomes the employee’s name. A note says “Employee Separation created.” The list shows Employee, Begins, and Status. An empty list says “Manage resignations, terminations, and offboarding.” An empty Activities table says “No rows yet.”

## If something looks wrong

**Create Employee Separation** names Employee, Separation Begins On, or Activity Name when a required field is empty.

“Failed to load” means the record did not open. Return to the list and click the row again.

“Save failed. Your edits are still here.” The form still has your entries. Click **Create Employee Separation** or **Save** again.
