# Departments

A department is a team in your company, such as the group an employee belongs to. Open **Department** under Employee Lifecycle. The list is titled Departments. You add and edit departments in a dialog on that list.

1. Click **New Department**. The dialog title is New Department, and it says “Add a department without leaving this list.”
2. Under Details, enter Name. Name is required. Code and Description are optional.
3. Choose Department Head when that person already has an employee record. The head is an employee, so add the employee first if the name is not listed yet.
4. Click **Create Department**.

To change a department, click its name, or use **Edit** on that row. The dialog says “Edit this department here.” Click **Save**. Click **Cancel** to close without saving.

On an employee record, Department under Company Details uses this list.

## What you should see

The Departments list shows Name, Code, Head, Description, and Status. Search reads “Search departments...” An empty list says “Organize your company structure by creating departments and teams,” with **New Department**.

A new department appears on the list after the dialog closes. Status shows Active. A note says “Department created.” Later saves say “Changes saved.”

Head shows the employee you chose as Department Head. It stays blank until you set one.

## If something looks wrong

**Create Department** names Name when that field is empty. Enter Name and try again.

The dialog says “This department could not be loaded” when the row will not open. Close the dialog and click the department again. If it is gone, it shows “Department not found” with **Back to list**.

Department Head is empty of people until you have employees. Create the employee, then edit the department and choose Department Head.

Saving with nothing new still requires Name. **Cancel** drops the dialog and leaves the list as it was.

**Delete** asks “Delete Department” and “Are you sure you want to delete this department? This action cannot be undone.” Confirm with **Delete**. If the delete does not complete, the row stays and the message says it could not delete the department.
