Pay in SmoothHiring is the Payroll section. Recording attendance or publishing a schedule does not create a salary slip. A slip is created only when someone opens Generate Salary Slip and runs Generate.

## Where to go

In the left navigation, open **Payroll**.

- **Salary Component** — one earning or deduction, such as base pay or a tax.
- **Salary Structure** — a package that lists those components and amounts.
- **Generate Salary Slip** — build a draft slip for one employee and one date range.
- **Salary Slip** — the slips already created. Open one to submit it, mark it paid, or cancel it.

Expenses are separate. Open **Expense Claims**, then **Expense Claim**. Advances are an **Employee Advance** record, opened from Desktop under **Payroll**, or from an employee’s **Connections** under **Pay and expenses**.

## Usual order

1. Create the Salary Components you pay and deduct.
2. Create a Salary Structure, add those components under **Earnings & Deductions**, and turn **Active** on.
3. Make sure the employee already has attendance for the dates you will pay. A published schedule is not attendance, and it is not pay.
4. Open **Generate Salary Slip**, choose the employee, the structure, and the dates, then click **Generate**.
5. On the salary slip, click **Submit**, then **Mark Paid** when the payment has been made. **Mark Paid** changes the status to **Paid**. It does not send money by itself.

You can also open an employee, then **Connections**, then **Pay and expenses**. **Pay slips** lists that person’s salary slips. There is no add button on pay slips, because a slip is created from **Generate Salary Slip**.

## What you should see

- Payroll lists four items: Salary Component, Salary Structure, Generate Salary Slip, and Salary Slip.
- A new slip opens as **Draft**, titled **Salary Slip** plus its number.
- The slip shows **Gross Pay**, **Total Deduction**, **Net Pay**, and **Payment days**.

## What can go wrong

- **Payment days** is 0, and the amounts are 0. Attendance for that employee and those dates is missing or does not count as time worked. Generate still creates the slip. Cancel it, record the attendance, and generate again.
- Generate says a salary slip already exists for this employee and period. Cancel the old slip first, or choose dates that do not overlap. A **Cancelled** slip does not block a new one.
- The structure is inactive, or it has no rows under **Earnings & Deductions**. Fix the structure, then return to Generate.
