![Request time off](/files/help/request-time-off-2.mp4 "Open Leave, then From. The request is not sent.")

A **Leave Application** is a time-off request. HR records one under **Leaves**. The employee can send their own from the portal. See [Request time off from the portal](/hrms/leaves/portal-time-off).

## Record a request

1. Open **Leaves**, then **Leave Application**.
2. The list is titled **Leave Applications**. Columns are **Employee**, **Type**, **Approver**, **Start**, **End**, and **Status**. Search says **Search leave applications...**
3. Choose **New Leave Application**.
4. The dialog is **New Leave Application**, and it says you can add the request without leaving the list.
5. Fill **Employee**, **Leave Type**, **Start Date**, and **End Date**. **Policy**, **Half day**, **Half day date**, **Reason**, and **Leave Approver** are on the same form. **Leave Approver Name** and **Status** are filled in for you. Status starts as **Open**.
6. Choose **Create Leave Application**.

You should see **Leave Application created**. The new row appears on the list with **Status** **Open**. That means the request is waiting for a decision.

An empty list says **No leave applications yet** and **Submit and review time-off requests when employees need leave.** **New Leave Application** is on that empty page too.

## If something looks wrong

**Employee**, **Leave Type**, **Start Date**, and **End Date** are required. If one is missing, the request is not created and the dialog stays open. The notice is **Failed to save**, or it names the missing field.

**Status** stays read-only. You approve or deny from the list while the status is **Open**. See [Approve time off](/hrms/leaves/approve-time-off) and [Deny time off](/hrms/leaves/deny-time-off).

## Next

The type the person can request comes from the policy assigned to them. See [Assign a policy](/hrms/leaves/assign-a-policy).
