# Submit an expense

An expense claim is how someone asks to be reimbursed. Open **Expense Claim** under Expense Claims. You can also open the employee, then **Connections**, then Pay and expenses, then the + on Expense claims. That opens a new claim with the employee already chosen.

1. Click **New Expense Claim**.
2. On Expenses & Advances, under Details, choose Employee. Posting Date is required and starts as today. Leave Status and Approval Status on Draft.
3. Under Expenses, click **Add Row**. Enter Expense Claim Type and Amount. Both are required. Expense Date, Description, Default Account, Sanctioned Amount, Cost Center, and Project are optional.
4. Add Remarks if you need a note. Click **Create Expense Claim**.
5. On the saved claim, click **Submit**.

## What you should see

A note says “Expense Claim created.” The title is Expense Claim plus its number, and the button becomes **Save**. After **Submit**, a note says “Submitted,” and the button shows **Submitting…** while it runs. **Approve** and **Reject** appear once the claim is submitted.

The list shows Employee, Posting Date, Claimed, and Status. An empty list says “Employees can submit expenses; finance can review and approve.”

Receipts go on the side under Attachments, after the claim is saved. There is no receipt column on the expense row.

## If something looks wrong

**Create Expense Claim** names Employee, Posting Date, or a row that is missing Expense Claim Type or Amount.

**Submit** is only on a saved claim. Create the claim first.

“Submit failed” means the claim stayed a draft. Open it again and click **Submit**.
