# Request an advance

An employee advance is a separate record from an expense claim. It is not in the sidebar under Expense Claims. Open it from the employee record, or from HR home under Payroll.

1. Open the employee, then **Connections**. Under Pay and expenses, use the + on Advances.
2. Or open **HR**, then Modules, then the Payroll block, then Employee Advance. Click **New Employee Advance**.
3. Choose Employee. Enter Posting Date, Purpose, and Advance Amount. Those fields are required.
4. Currency starts as USD. Exchange Rate starts as 1. Leave them unless this advance uses another currency.
5. Click **Create Employee Advance**.

## What you should see

Status starts as Draft and cannot be edited on the form. Paid Amount, Pending Amount, Claimed Amount, and Return Amount are read-only. The list shows Employee, Posting Date, Amount, and Status. An empty list says “Track salary advances and recovery schedules.” Search reads “Search employee advances...”.

On the employee, Advances under Pay and expenses shows a count, and a chip says how many are in draft.

## If something looks wrong

**Create Employee Advance** names Employee, Posting Date, Purpose, or Advance Amount when one of them is empty.

The + on Advances is on a saved employee. Create the employee first, then open **Connections**.

An advance does not create a salary slip, and it does not submit an expense claim. To repay it against a claim, open the expense claim and add a row under Advances.
