# Shift types

A shift type is the name, hours, and color you drag onto a day on Assign shifts. Creating one does not assign a person.

1. Open **Assign shifts**.
2. Choose **New shift type**.
3. Enter a name, a start, and an end, and pick a roster color.
4. Leave **Mark attendance from this shift** on unless you want to turn it off. The note says scheduled people are marked present from clock punches unless you turn this off.
5. Choose **Save**.

## What you should see

The new color appears on the row above the grid. The page says to drag a color onto a day to assign it, or onto an existing shift to change the color.

The dialog title is New shift type. Opening a color you already have uses Edit shift type.

## If something looks wrong

If there are no colors yet, the page says Add a shift type to drag onto the grid. Choose **New shift type**.

**Delete** removes that shift type from the roster. The confirm says this cannot be undone. While editing, **Keep assignments, hide from picker** hides it from the picker and keeps the assignments.

Staff still see assignments only after you publish the month on [Assign shifts](/hrms/attendance/roster).
