# Post an open shift

![Post an open shift](/files/help/post-open-shift-2.mp4 "Choose Post shift, pick the shift type and a later date, then choose Post. The new row shows on Posted.")

A manager posts a day that still needs coverage on **Open Shifts** under Shift & Attendance. Staff see it on the portal and choose Claim. Publishing a schedule does not create pay, and posting a shift does not put anyone on the roster until you approve a claim.

1. Open **Open Shifts**. Stay on **Posted**.
2. Choose **Post shift**. The empty list uses the same **Post shift**.
3. In **Post a shift**, choose **Shift type** and **Date**. Set **Department** when you are limiting who can claim it. **Slots** starts at 1.
4. Choose **Post**. Choose **Cancel** to leave without posting.

The dialog says staff in this department can claim it, and that you approve the claim to put them on the roster.

## What you should see

The confirmation says Shift posted — staff can claim it. The row is on **Posted**, with the date, shift and hours, department (or All), slots filled out of slots available, who is waiting, and status Open.

Staff with that department see it on **Open shifts**. See [Claim an open shift](/hrms/attendance/claim-an-open-shift).

An empty list says No open shifts, and Post a day that still needs coverage. Staff will see it on the portal.

## If something looks wrong

The form says Choose a shift type and date when either is missing. It says Choose a department when a department is required. It says Slots must be at least 1. A past date says Choose today or a later day. A failed post says Could not post this shift.

To take a posted shift down, set its status from Open to **Pulled**. The confirmation says Shift pulled. A Filled or Pulled row stays on that status. If the page cannot load, it says Could not load open shifts.
