# Open shifts

![Open shifts](/files/help/tour-open-shifts.mp4 "Open shifts, claims, and change requests.")

Staff claim a posted shift. Managers review those claims and put an approved person on the roster.

1. On the employee portal, open **Open shifts**.
2. Choose **Claim** on a row that still needs coverage.

A manager then:

1. Opens **Open Shifts** under Shift & Attendance.
2. On **Posted**, chooses **Post shift**, fills the shift, department, date, and slots, and chooses **Post**.
3. Opens **Claims**. A new claim shows **Waiting**.
4. Chooses **Approved** or **Declined**.

## What you should see

Staff with nothing to claim see No open shifts. The page says there are no open shifts in your department right now.

After **Post**, the shift is on Posted. Waiting lists the people waiting to claim it. Status on that row can read Open, Filled, or Pulled.

A manager with no claims sees No claims yet. Approved claims stay in the list. Approving a claim says On the roster.

## If something looks wrong

**Claim** is unavailable on a past date.

Approving a claim for a past day stops with Choose today or a later day. **Declined** is still available.

To take a posted shift down, set its status to **Pulled**. Staff then stop seeing it as open.
