# Put a shift on a day

Drag a shift color onto the Assign shifts grid. The day stays a draft until you publish. Publishing does not create pay, and putting a shift on a day does not clock anyone in.

1. Open **Assign shifts**.
2. Drag a color onto an empty day, or across several empty days. Drop a color onto a shift that is already there to change that color.
3. Or click the day. In **Assign shift**, set **Staff**, **Shift type**, **Start date**, and **End date**, then choose **Assign**.

## What you should see

The page says to drag a color onto a day to assign it, or onto an existing shift to change the color. The new shift shows on that person’s row, and the count under the toolbar updates the number of shifts.

The month chip stays Draft, or Updates waiting if a published version already exists. Staff do not see the new day until you choose **Publish** or **Publish updates**.

## If something looks wrong

The page says Add a shift type to drag onto the grid. Choose **New shift type**, name it, set **Starts** and **Ends**, and choose **Save**.

If the day is marked Can’t work, you can still click it and choose **Assign**. A blocking conflict in the dialog must be cleared before **Assign** will finish.
