Looking to hire salespeople? Well, we’ve already discussed the three crucial parts an effective job description should include: an excellent “About You” that sells yourself as an employer, a fitting “About the Job” that makes sure to sell the position to the RIGHT candidates, and an attractive “Rewards” section that sells the benefits of working for you. Now, we’re going to analyze several 100 percent REAL job postings so you can see just how valuable those three parts can be.
At ClearFit, it’s not enough for us to just give you the tools you need for success; we also want to show you the best ways to use them!
Since creating an effective job description is all about selling (your company, the position, etc.), it’s appropriate that our first entry in the job post analysis series will focus on hiring a Sales Rep. The best sales reps will have lots of drive, be good at influencing others, have a high risk tolerance, take leadership well, and be able to recover easily from setbacks. Keeping those skills and the three crucial parts mentioned above in mind, let’s look at some job postings.

- At least 6 months of Sales Experience preferred
- Backgrounds in Retail, Banking, Customer Service, Outside Sales are a plus
- Good Communication Skills
- Strong Desire To Succeed
- Positive, Team-Oriented Attitude
GRADE: C+
ANALYSIS: What this posting has in self-enthusiasm, it lacks in attracting the right kind of candidates.
As you can see, Company 1 definitely has the selling itself part down! The majority of this posting is tailored to make candidates ask themselves, “Why WOULDN’T I apply for this position?” Not only does Company 1 talk itself up, but it also emphasizes (with capital letters, no less) the employee benefits.
This ad will no doubt receive a LOT of applications. Unfortunately, many of those applications will not come from quality candidates. This post spends so much time focusing on the company and the benefits, that it only devotes a small space at the end to focusing on what kind of candidates Company 1 wants.
In addition, the requirements themselves are incredibly generic and no different from a thousand other job postings for a thousand other DIFFERENT positions. What job doesn’t require good communication skills, a strong desire to succeed, and a positive, team-oriented attitude? Where’s the high risk tolerance? Where’s the influencing others and recovering from setbacks? Nowhere. That’s why this company is going to have to spend time and money sifting through thousands of the same, generic applicants.
Job Posting #2
Outside Sales Representative
About the Job
Position Summary
The position objective is to achieve planned/target sales increases within the assigned customer base, develop new accounts, and provide customer service that exceeds the customer’s expectations. The assigned customer base is made up of professional car repair and maintenance shops.
Significant personal growth potential and multiple career paths are available to the successful representative.
Qualifications
To be considered for this position you must be bilingual with 5 years minimum outside sales experience in a business-to-business, high transaction frequency, industrial environment. Automotive parts aftermarket sales experience preferred. You will also need to have a basic understanding of spreadsheet and word processing software.
GRADE: D-
ANALYSIS:Whereas Company 1 went all out to sell itself and its benefits, Company 2 seems to prefer concision. However, there is a distinct difference between concision and a lack of content—a difference Company 2 does not seem to realize.
First, there’s hardly any information about Company 2. All we can tell is that it has something to do with selling auto parts. Is this a hungry, new company determined to make its mark? Is this a time-tested, respected company offering a name customers trust? Is this a family run business? An employee-focused company? A customer service juggernaut? Who knows? Not the applicants.
Second, the benefits are vague and unimpressively marketed. Touting personal growth potential and multiple careers paths is the same as offering an employee a cubicle of his own and free parking in the company lot. There’s nothing here to woo a five star candidate.
Third, the qualifications, while specific to a point, offer no depth, just a check list of requirements/skills. There’s nothing here to indicate the type of person they’re looking for; there’s a total lack of adjectives. Does the company not want someone driven, influential, and easily able to bounce back from setbacks? Not according to this job post.

GRADE: B+
ANALYSIS: Overall, this is a pretty solid job posting. All the parts are there and effective, but it could still use a bit of punching up.
Company 3 offers solid, impressive information about itself. Who wouldn’t want to work for a globally successful industry leader? This company also tells potential candidates exactly what they will be doing and what will be expected of them. There’s no mystery or vagueness here. Also, several of the requirements are very effective, letting a potential employee know he has to be competitive (have drive), be able to work both independently and as part of a team (take leadership well), and have SPECIFIC strong communication skills (which will help him in influencing others).
The one place Company 3 could afford to add a little bit more is under compensation. Claiming to offer a competitive compensation package and actually listing the parts of said package are two very different things. Also, listing the package pieces would negate the need to include the honest but unfriendly “no relocation assistance.” If it’s not on the list, it’s not offered.

GRADE: B+
ANALYSIS: This is an additional pretty solid job posting that could still be better.
Company 4 is another company that knows how to sell itself as an employer in general and as one with benefits. Limitless compensation and potential in a recession-resistant industry would be music to any candidate’s ears.
Like Company 1, however, Company 4’s weak spot lies in its Skills and Qualifications area. While the requirements here aren’t as generic as possible, they could still greatly benefit from more specifics. What are some networking and business development skills a candidate should have? However, Company 4 does do a good job of indicating a candidate must have drive, using the word “motivated” twice. The request for someone passionate and enthusiastic will also help to ensure candidates who can recover from setbacks and who will take risks.

Multi Media Sales Rep
About the Job
Multi Media Sales Rep

Candidate must also be well organized and able to work on multiple tasks while adhering to daily deadlines. Sales experience is required. Our ideal candidate will have a positive attitude and a desire for a challenge. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and Outlook are required.
If you are energetic, have the drive to succeed and enjoy building lifelong relationships then we want to talk to you!
GRADE: C-
ANALYSIS: Company 5 knows what it wants, but is rather shy when it comes to talking about itself.
Again we have a company that we know little about aside from the area it operates in—multi-media. There’s no history and there are no benefits. Even though Company 5 knows what type of candidates it wants, it offers nothing to lure those candidates in.
What this post does excel at is stating the candidate requirements. This takes up almost half of the word count, so we can see how important the poster considers it. The company wants a driven, energetic, positive candidate who likes a challenge. A post showing that the company knows exactly who it is looking for is more likely to attract a strong candidate. However, just showing that is far from enough.

GRADE: A+
ANALYSIS: A virtually ideal job post.
Company 6 concisely but effectively tells you who they are. They’re the #1 selling bottled water company in the world and they like high achievers. It’s a dignified method of selling themselves without coming across like used car-salesmen.
This company also lays out exactly what the job requires. They know what they want and they want applicants to know EXACTLY what the company will expect of them—and that’s before they even get to the requirements section of the post.
The post states this company is looking for a candidate who enjoys a challenge, likes meeting new people, has a history of exceeding performance goals, is persistent (someone who does not take ‘no’ for an answer), is energetic, has high integrity, and is responsible. That’s pretty much a ClearFit-approved sales rep in a nutshell (just using different terms).
And as if this post couldn’t get any more effective, it goes on to detail the multiple benefits (both possible and guaranteed) of working for this company. If the rest of this company is as efficient and effective as whoever creates the job postings, it’s no surprise they’re the global #1 in their field.
